Thunder Thursday: National Midgets at Lawrenceburg ’03

The USAC National Midgets made a visit to the old fairgrounds track at the Lawrenceburg Speedway on June 1, 2003. During the feature, like a shark stalking its prey, one could almost hear the theme music from “Jaws” playing in the background as Phoenix, Arizona’s J.J. Yeley lurked behind early leaders Jay Drake and Shane Hollingsworth. When Hollingsworth made a costly mistake on the 24th lap after jumping the back-straightaway curb, Yeley smelled blood in the water and went for the attack. Once Yeley pounced to the lead, it was “the end” for the rest of the field. Or, as the word displayed at the conclusion of many a French film during the final credits says, “Fin.” – Richie Murray
